N'Djamena sits where the Chari and Logone rivers meet, on Chad's border with Cameroon, a flat, spread-out capital of wide avenues, neem trees and sandy side streets. French and Arabic share the signs and the conversations, the Grand Marché sells everything from spices and dates to bolts of cloth, and the Chari riverbank is where the city comes out once the heat breaks. Most travellers from Canada come to see family or for work. Chad faces serious security problems, particularly along its borders and in the east near Sudan, so read the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before planning any trip.
When to go
N'Djamena is one of the hottest capitals in the world, and the season you pick shapes the trip. November to February is the best window, with dry, sunny days in the low 30s Celsius and cooler nights, though the harmattan can wrap the city in dust haze. From March to May the heat is fierce and often passes 40 degrees. The rains come from about June to September, bringing humidity and storms, and the rivers keep rising into the autumn, when low-lying neighbourhoods can flood.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada to Hassan Djamous International Airport. From Montreal (YUL), the usual routing is one connection in Paris, with Istanbul or Addis Ababa as alternatives; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto, so two connections in all. The airport is right in the city, a short drive from most hotels, and a pickup arranged in advance makes the arrival much easier.
What to see and do
- The Grand Marché and the streets around the Grand Mosque
- Sunset along the Chari River
- The elephants of Zakouma National Park in the dry season, usually reached by air
Good to know before you go
Shared taxis and moto-taxis are the local way around, but visitors are better served by a driver arranged through a hotel, employer or family, and by not moving around after dark. There is no ride-hailing app to count on. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, cash is essential, euros are the easiest to exchange, and card payment outside a few hotels is rare. French and Arabic are both official languages, so French works for nearly everything. Drink bottled water, dress conservatively, ask before photographing people, and never photograph government buildings, the military, bridges or the airport, which can lead to detention.
