Yaoundé is built across a run of green hills, so most streets climb or drop, and the city opens up in long views from the summit of Mont Fébé. Cameroon's capital is calmer and more administrative than Douala on the coast, with leafy Bastos, the Mokolo and central markets, and street grills serving soya skewers, braised fish and plantain well into the night, with ndolé on every lunch menu. Many Montreal families know this trip well, and when you want the sea, the Atlantic beaches of Kribi are a few hours' drive away.

When to go

At around 750 metres, Yaoundé is milder than the coast, with highs in the high 20s Celsius most of the year. The long dry season, from about mid-November to mid-March, is the easiest time to visit, and a shorter dry spell arrives in July and August. Rain falls in two seasons, a shorter one from about March to June and a longer, heavier one from September to November, with afternoon storms that turn unpaved roads to red mud. Kribi's beaches are at their best in the same long dry season.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada to Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport. From Montreal (YUL), the common routings take one connection in Paris or Brussels, with Istanbul, Casablanca and Addis Ababa as other options, and some itineraries also call at Douala; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Nsimalen is well south of the city, around 30 to 45 minutes from the centre depending on traffic, and a taxi or a pre-arranged driver is the way in.

What to see and do

  • Mont Fébé and the art museum at its Benedictine monastery
  • The Reunification Monument
  • Mokolo Market
  • Ape Action Africa's primate sanctuary at Mefou
  • A weekend in Kribi and the Lobé Falls, which pour straight into the sea

Good to know before you go

Shared yellow taxis are everywhere: flag one down, call out your destination and an offer, and pay per seat, or ask for a dépôt to have the car to yourself. Ride-hailing apps such as Yango operate in the city and spare you the negotiating, and a driver from your hotel is the safer choice at night. The currency is the Central African CFA franc; cash covers most things, cards work in the larger hotels and some supermarkets, and mobile money is everywhere among locals. French and English are both official and Yaoundé is mostly French-speaking, so Québécois visitors are at ease. Drink bottled water, take malaria prevention, and check the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before booking, since the Far North and the two English-speaking western regions have seen violence while the capital has generally been calmer.
