Nevis is the smaller half of the twin-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, a nearly round island rising to the cloud-capped cone of Nevis Peak, with old sugar estates on its slopes now turned into plantation inns. Its capital, Charlestown, is a compact harbour town of stone and wooden buildings where Alexander Hamilton was born; a house on the site of his birthplace now holds the Museum of Nevis History. Life moves slowly here, between the long sands of Pinney's Beach, the hot springs at Bath Village and a bowl of goat water, the islands' signature stew, at a roadside stand.
When to go
The dry season, from December to April, brings warm sunny days, steady breezes and the highest hotel rates. May to November is greener, more humid and quieter, but falls within the Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August to October. Culturama, the island's festival of music, pageants and street parades, runs from late July into early August around Emancipation Day.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal, and most visitors arrive through St. Kitts (SKB), which has more connections, usually via a US hub such as Miami, Charlotte or New York: from Montreal (YUL) that is typically one connection, from Quebec City (YQB) two. From St. Kitts, passenger ferries cross from Basseterre to Charlestown in about 45 minutes, water taxis make the short hop across The Narrows from the southeast peninsula, and a car ferry links the two islands as well. Nevis also has its own small airport, Vance W. Amory, near Newcastle in the north, served by small regional flights from neighbouring islands.

Good to know before you go
Nevis has no ride-hailing app, so taxis are the main way around: rates are fixed by the government, so confirm the fare before you set off and keep a driver's number for the return. Local minibuses run along the single road that circles the island and are cheap and friendly, if not always frequent. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the currency, US dollars are widely accepted, and cards work at hotels and larger restaurants, while minibuses and roadside stands want cash. English is spoken, traffic drives on the left, and most visitors drink bottled or filtered water. Green vervet monkeys, brought over in colonial times, roam the hillsides and will raid an unattended picnic, and swimwear is for the beach, not for town.
