Ouarzazate sits on a high, stony plateau on the south side of the High Atlas, where the road from Marrakesh comes down off the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the country turns to desert. The town itself is low-key, built around the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios that have made the region a backlot for desert epics, but it works best as a base. Within a day's drive lie the earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou, the palm groves of Skoura, the gorges of the Dadès and the long Draa valley running south toward the dunes.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons, with warm days, cool nights and clear air. Summer is scorching and dry, which pushes desert outings into the early morning. Winter brings bright, mild days but nights close to freezing, and snow can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass for a few hours or even days. In May, the Rose Valley near Kelaat M'Gouna celebrates the harvest with its rose festival.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop to Ouarzazate from Canada. From Montreal (YUL) there are nonstop flights to Casablanca, where a domestic flight continues to Ouarzazate; from Quebec City (YQB), you first connect through Montreal or route through a European hub such as Paris. Many travellers instead fly into Marrakesh and cover the last stretch by road over the High Atlas, four to five hours by bus or private transfer. Ouarzazate's airport is just outside town, a few minutes from the centre by taxi.
What to see and do
- The earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou
- The Taourirt Kasbah in the centre of town
- A tour of the Atlas Film Studios sets
- The Skoura palm grove and Kasbah Amridil
- The Draa valley road south toward Zagora and the dunes
Good to know before you go
The centre is small enough to walk, and cheap petits taxis handle trips around town; agree on the fare before setting off if the meter stays off. Shared grands taxis run to Aït Benhaddou and Skoura and CTM buses connect Marrakesh and Zagora, but for the gorges and the desert most visitors hire a driver or join a small-group tour. The currency is the Moroccan dirham; ATMs are easy to find in town, but carry cash for kasbahs, guides and roadside stops. Arabic, Amazigh (Tamazight) and French are spoken, so French goes a long way, and bottled water is the safer choice. Dress modestly in villages, ask before photographing people, and if an unofficial guide offers a kasbah tour, agree on a price first or decline politely.
