Niamey spreads along the Niger River, a low, sandy capital where pirogues slide past rice fields and fishermen within sight of the Kennedy Bridge. Its centrepiece is the National Museum, part museum and part garden, with traditional houses from across the country, artisan workshops and dinosaur fossils dug out of the Sahara, and the Grand Marché is a short ride away. Niamey is among the hottest cities on earth, so the season matters. November to February brings the most comfortable weather, dry and sunny with warm days and cool nights, along with the harmattan's dusty haze. From March to May temperatures regularly pass 40 degrees Celsius, and the rains, roughly June to September, bring humidity, short violent storms and the walls of dust that sweep in ahead of them. The river is often at its highest in the dry winter months, when floodwater from the Guinean highlands upstream finally reaches the city.

Getting there from Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada, and the airlines serving Diori Hamani International Airport have changed several times since 2023. Routings from Montreal (YUL) usually connect through Casablanca or Istanbul, or through a West African hub such as Abidjan or Lomé, with one or two stops; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Confirm that every leg is still operating close to departure. The airport is southeast of the city, about 20 minutes from the centre.

Niamey's taxis are mostly shared and charge per seat on set routes, with a private hire costing more, and moto-taxis are common but not a good idea for visitors. The safest approach is a driver arranged by your hotel, employer or family, and staying in after dark. The currency is the West African CFA franc, cash is essential, euros are the easiest to exchange, and cards are rarely accepted outside a few hotels. French is the official language, with Hausa and Zarma the everyday languages in the city.
