Nosy Be is a green volcanic island off Madagascar's northwest coast, warm all year and scented by the ylang-ylang plantations that earned it the nickname Island of Perfumes. Life moves between the port town of Hell-Ville, the guesthouses and bars of Ambatoloaka, and long beaches like Andilana in the north. The real draw lies offshore: boat trips to islets with lemurs, coral gardens, sea turtles and seasonal whale sharks.

When to go

The dry season, from May to October or November, brings sunny days, calmer seas and the best conditions for boat trips and diving. Whale sharks gather offshore from about September to December, and humpback whales pass through the channel during the southern winter. The rainy season, from December to March, is hot and humid, with heavy showers and a risk of cyclones, and boat trips can be cancelled at short notice.

Getting there from Montreal

Nosy Be is a long journey from Canada, usually with two or three connections. From Montreal (YUL), you typically connect through Paris, Addis Ababa or Johannesburg, or reach Antananarivo first and take a domestic flight north; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal. Fascene airport is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from Hell-Ville and the Ambatoloaka beach area, and most hotels offer a pickup.

What to see and do

  • Black lemurs and chameleons in the Lokobe reserve
  • Nosy Komba, the lemur island off Hell-Ville
  • Snorkelling with turtles in the Nosy Tanikely marine reserve
  • The sandbar linking the two islets of Nosy Iranja
  • Sunset over the crater lakes from Mont Passot

Good to know before you go

Tuk-tuks (called bajaj) and taxis cover the island's main roads between Hell-Ville, the airport and the beaches; agree on the fare before you set off. Many visitors rent a scooter for a few days, though road surfaces vary, and trips to the outer islets leave by boat from Hell-Ville and Ambatoloaka, best booked through your hotel or a reputable operator with life jackets on board. The currency is the Malagasy ariary, and while euros are widely accepted for excursions, cash is essential since ATMs are few and mostly in Hell-Ville. French and Malagasy are spoken, so French gets you far; drink bottled water and take malaria precautions. Respect local fady (taboos) at sacred sites such as the crater lakes, where guides explain what is forbidden.

Entry requirements and health

Visa on arrival or e-Visa

A visa is needed, and the easy part is you can usually get it right on arrival or online beforehand. Bring the fee and the right papers and you're set.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever proof only comes into play if you're arriving from a country that has it. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
