Maun is a dusty, unhurried frontier town on the banks of the Thamalakane River in northern Botswana, and the main gateway to the Okavango Delta. Each year, rain that falls on the Angolan highlands flows south and spreads across the Kalahari sands, flooding a maze of channels, lagoons and islands where elephants, hippos, lions and hundreds of bird species gather. From Maun, light aircraft fan out to remote camps, 4x4s head into Moremi Game Reserve, and local polers guide mokoro canoes through the papyrus.

When to go

The floodwaters reach the delta in the middle of the dry season, so the water peaks roughly from June to August, under clear skies, when wildlife concentrates around the channels. The dry season, May to October, is the classic safari period: cold nights and mornings in June and July, then rising heat that makes October the hottest month. The green season, November to April, brings afternoon thunderstorms, newborn animals, migratory birds and lower camp rates, though some areas become harder to reach.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no direct route from Canada, and Maun is usually two connections away. From Montreal (YUL), the common routing runs through a European, Gulf or US hub to Johannesburg, then a short regional flight to Maun; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. Some itineraries reach Maun through Cape Town, Gaborone or Kasane instead. Maun's airport is right in town, and lodges and safari operators usually meet you there or put you straight on a light aircraft to camp.

What to see and do

  • A mokoro trip through the delta's channels
  • A scenic flight over the delta by light aircraft or helicopter
  • Game drives in Moremi Game Reserve
  • The Makgadikgadi and Nxai salt pans east of Maun

Good to know before you go

In Maun, public transport means combi minibuses and taxis around town, and the delta itself is reached by 4x4, boat or light aircraft, almost always arranged through your lodge or a licensed safari operator. Light aircraft to the camps often limit luggage to a soft bag of 15 to 20 kilograms, so pack accordingly. The currency is the Botswana pula; cards are accepted in Maun and at most lodges, and US dollars are often welcome for tips. English is the official language and widely spoken alongside Setswana; drink bottled or filtered water and take malaria precautions in the north. Follow your guide's instructions in the bush: never walk alone outside camp at night, and stay seated in the vehicle near animals.
