Iquitos is the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road, a Peruvian river port surrounded by Amazon rainforest and reachable only by plane or boat. The rubber boom left mansions faced with Portuguese tiles along the Malecón Tarapacá, while below it the Belén district floats or stands on stilts depending on the river level. From the docks, boats head out to jungle lodges along the Amazon and Napo rivers, as far as the flooded forests of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, where pink river dolphins surface beside the canoe!
When to go
Iquitos is hot and humid all year, with rain possible any day, so the seasons are set by the river. High water, roughly December to May, floods the forest and lets canoes glide between the treetops and deep into side channels. Low water, roughly June to November, uncovers sandy banks and more trails, and concentrates fish and birds in the lakes. Both work well: high water is best for paddling through the canopy, low water for hiking and birdwatching.
Getting there from Montreal
With no road link, you arrive by air, almost always through Lima. From Montreal (YUL), expect one connection to Lima (Toronto, a US hub, Panama City or Bogotá), then a domestic flight of under two hours to Iquitos; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. The airport is about 20 minutes from the centre by mototaxi or taxi, and most lodges meet you there. The only other way in is a multi-day riverboat from Yurimaguas or Pucallpa.
What to see and do
- A few nights at an Amazon river lodge
- Belén market and its floating district
- Rescued manatees at the Amazon Rescue Center
- Rubber-boom mansions along the Malecón Tarapacá
Good to know before you go
Mototaxis, three-wheeled motorbike cabs, are the way around town; agree on the fare first, and do not count on ride-hailing apps. Peru uses the sol and Iquitos runs mostly on cash, so use ATMs in the centre before heading to a lodge. Spanish is the language, with English mainly at lodges. Drink only bottled or treated water, and see a travel clinic about yellow fever vaccination and malaria. Visit Belén with a local guide and keep valuables out of sight. The city's many ayahuasca retreats are unregulated and have caused serious harm, so talk to a doctor first, especially if you take medication.
Entry requirements and health
No visa needed
Good news: with a Canadian passport you can just show up for a short tourist stay, no visa needed. Keep an eye on how long you're allowed to stay so your trip fits.
Vaccines and health
Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
General orientation for a Canadian passport on a short tourist trip, not legal or medical advice. Confirm with official sources, and see a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure.
