Arequipa sits in a high desert valley beneath three volcanoes, and its old core is built almost entirely from sillar, a pale volcanic stone that glows white in the sun. When to go
The dry season from May to October brings clear skies and cool nights, and it is the best window for canyon trekking and condor watching. The rainy months from December to March are greener but can cloud the volcano views and complicate mountain roads. Arequipa sits at about 2,300 metres, so nights stay chilly year round and the altitude is worth easing into.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
From Québec City or Montréal you will connect through a US hub such as Miami or Atlanta, then reach Lima, and take a short domestic hop to Arequipa. Expect an overnight leg and a full day of travel in total, since there is no nonstop option from eastern Canada. Many travelers spend a night in Lima before continuing south.
