Flights from Quebec City (YQB) and Montreal (YUL) to Arequipa, Peru
Here is what to know before booking a flight to Arequipa from Quebec City and Montreal.
From Montreal, fares to Arequipa usually run between $1000 and $1700. The best fare spotted recently is $1032 (about 10% below the typical price).
Arequipa sits in a high desert valley beneath three volcanoes, and its old core is built almost entirely from sillar, a pale volcanic stone that glows white in the sun. The pace is calmer than Lima, the food scene is one of Peru's proudest, and the surrounding countryside drops into some of the deepest canyons on earth. Come for the colonial streets, then follow the road out to the condors!
When to go
The dry season from May to October brings clear skies and cool nights, and it is the best window for canyon trekking and condor watching. The rainy months from December to March are greener but can cloud the volcano views and complicate mountain roads. Arequipa sits at about 2,300 metres, so nights stay chilly year round and the altitude is worth easing into.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
From Québec City or Montréal you will connect through a US hub such as Miami or Atlanta, then reach Lima, and take a short domestic hop to Arequipa. Expect an overnight leg and a full day of travel in total, since there is no nonstop option from eastern Canada. Many travelers spend a night in Lima before continuing south.
What to see and do
- Santa Catalina Monastery, a walled convent city of painted lanes and courtyards
- Plaza de Armas and the sillar-stone cathedral
- Colca Canyon and its condor viewpoints, a few hours north
- Museo Santuarios Andinos, home of the Juanita ice mummy
Good to know before you go
Getting around town is easy with Uber, Cabify, InDrive or DiDi, and registered taxis are widely available for canyon-day pickups. The currency is the Peruvian sol; carry some cash for markets and small villages where cards are not accepted. Spanish is the everyday language, and a few words go a long way. Take the altitude seriously on your first day and drink plenty of water.
