Getting there from Montreal
From eastern Canada, the route runs through Lima, followed by a two-hour domestic flight to Juliaca; shared vans and taxis then cover the hour to Puno on the lakeshore. The altitude is serious here, so plan a gentle first day, or acclimatize in Cusco first and arrive by the scenic route.

The currency is the Peruvian sol and cash in small bills is essential outside hotels. Cheap colectivos and taxis link Juliaca and Puno, agree on the fare before setting off, and island excursions leave from Puno's port every morning. Go easy for the first day or two at altitude: walk slowly, drink lots of water and try the coca tea locals swear by. Pack warm layers, the sun is fierce at noon and nights drop below freezing.
