Good to know before you go

Getting around relies on shared minibuses and registered taxis, as ride-hailing apps are very limited here, so agree on taxi fares before setting off. The currency is the Surinamese dollar, and cash is important since card acceptance is patchy outside larger hotels. Dutch is the official language, with Sranan Tongo widely spoken as the common tongue, and English will get you some way. It is malaria-aware territory in the interior, so check health advice before heading upriver.
