When to go

March to June is the main season, mild while the plains swelter, though May and June bring crowds of Indian holidaymakers. The monsoon, July to September, brings heavy rain, fog and landslides that can close roads and delay the toy train. October and November are the clearest months, with crisp air and views of the snow peaks to the north. Winter is cold, and snowfall, most likely in late December and January, draws its own crowds but can block the roads for a day or two.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop to Chandigarh from Canada, and it is usually two connections away. From Montreal (YUL) you typically fly through a European or Gulf hub to Delhi or Mumbai, then take a short domestic flight to Chandigarh (IXC); from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. From Chandigarh, Shimla is roughly 3 to 4 hours by taxi, or you can ride to Kalka, under an hour away, for the toy train, a slow, scenic journey of five to six hours worth booking in advance.

Good to know before you go

Central Shimla is built for walking: vehicles are kept off the Mall and the Ridge, and a public lift links the lower Cart Road with the Mall. For trips to Kufri or Mashobra, hire a taxi from a stand or through your hotel; Uber and Ola work well in Chandigarh but do not count on them in Shimla, and driving yourself on these mountain roads is not advised. The currency is the Indian rupee; UPI phone payments dominate and foreign cards work mostly in hotels, so carry cash for taxis and small shops. Canadians need a visa for India, normally the e-Visa, but the rules for Canadian passport holders have changed in recent years, so check the current situation before booking. Drink bottled water, and keep sunglasses and snacks out of sight on the way to Jakhoo, where the monkeys are bold thieves.
