Hilo is the old harbour town on the wet, green east side of Hawaii Island, with wooden storefronts along its bayfront, banyan trees lining Banyan Drive and waterfalls fed by more than three metres of rain a year. It is the closest town to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, under an hour up the road, and the starting point for the drive up Mauna Kea. Between the farmers market, the Japanese gardens on the bay and the lunch counters serving loco moco, a dish Hilo claims as its own, the town gives a slower, local view of the island.
When to go
Hilo is warm all year, around 27 or 28°C by day, and it rains in every season; winter, from November to March, is the wettest stretch, while the summer months tend to be a little drier. The rain mostly comes as passing showers and it is what keeps the waterfalls and gardens running, so pack a light rain jacket instead of waiting for a dry week. The week after Easter belongs to the Merrie Monarch Festival, the most prestigious hula competition in Hawaii, when hotels sell out months ahead. Higher up, the volcano summit area is cool and damp, and the top of Mauna Kea drops to near freezing at night and can get snow in winter.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
Expect a long trip with two or three connections. From Montreal (YUL) or Quebec City (YQB), you first reach a Canadian or US west coast gateway such as Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco or Los Angeles, then either continue to Honolulu for a short interisland hop of under an hour to Hilo, or fly to Kona on the west side and cross the island on the Saddle Road, about an hour and a half by road. Flying to the US through Montreal or Toronto, you clear American customs before departure, and Canadians need no visa. Hilo's airport is about 10 minutes from downtown.
What to see and do
- Kilauea's summit crater and lava tubes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
- Akaka Falls and the Hamakua Coast
- Stargazing on the slopes of Mauna Kea
- Liliuokalani Gardens and the footbridge to Coconut Island
- Hilo Farmers Market and Rainbow Falls
Good to know before you go
Hele-On county buses connect Hilo with Kona and the Volcano area on limited schedules, and Uber, Lyft and taxis run in town, though in small numbers. The volcano, the Hamakua Coast and Mauna Kea are spread out, so if you are not driving, guided tours are the realistic way to reach them, and the Mauna Kea summit road requires four-wheel drive. The currency is the US dollar and cards are widely accepted, but bring some cash for the farmers market. The surf on this coast is rough, so swim at sheltered spots such as Richardson Ocean Park, and stay out of streams and waterfall pools after heavy rain, when flash floods rise fast. Mauna Kea is sacred in Hawaiian tradition, so keep to marked areas.
