Bangui sits on a wide bend of the Ubangi River, with the forested bank of the Democratic Republic of the Congo directly across and pirogues crossing between the two all day. The capital of the Central African Republic is a low-rise city of red earth, mango trees and riverside markets, where the red-brick Notre-Dame cathedral is the landmark everyone names, and the Boali Falls are the classic outing beyond town. Most people flying in from Canada are visiting family or working with aid and church organizations. The country has been unstable for years, with armed groups active across much of its territory, so read the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before you book anything.

When to go

Bangui is hot and humid all year, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, so the seasons are defined by rain rather than heat. The dry season, roughly December to February, is the easiest time to travel: skies are clearer, roads are passable and the river drops low enough to show its sandbanks. The rains build from March or April and are heaviest from about July to October, when afternoon storms are intense and unpaved roads out of the city turn to mud. If you hope to see the Boali Falls at full force, the end of the rains is the time.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada, and Bangui M'Poko International Airport has a limited set of routes. From Montreal (YUL), the usual routing is one connection in Paris, or a connection through Addis Ababa or Casablanca, sometimes with a further stop in a regional city such as Douala. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto, so plan on two connections or more. The airport is on the northwest edge of the city, a short drive from the centre, and having a confirmed pickup waiting is strongly recommended.

What to see and do

  • Notre-Dame Cathedral, the red-brick landmark of the centre
  • Sunset over the Ubangi River from the waterfront
  • The Boali Falls on the Mbali River, a couple of hours northwest

Good to know before you go

Bangui has no public transit a visitor can rely on: shared taxis and moto-taxis serve locals, but newcomers do better with a driver arranged through their hotel, employer or family, and by not moving around after dark. No ride-hailing app has meaningful coverage here. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, cash is used for nearly everything, and euros are the easiest foreign currency to exchange. French and Sango are the official languages, so Québécois visitors can get by in French from the airport onward. Drink only bottled or treated water, take malaria prevention seriously, and never photograph soldiers, police, checkpoints or government buildings.
