The Gambia is a narrow country that follows its river inland from the Atlantic, and Banjul, the small capital on an island at the river's mouth, is only the start of it. Most visitors base themselves a short drive west on the coast, where the beaches of Kotu, Kololi and the Senegambia strip line up hotels, beach bars and fruit sellers, and where fishing pirogues come ashore at Tanji every afternoon. Head upriver and the coast gives way to mangrove creeks, more than 500 bird species, and Kunta Kinteh Island, a sobering stop on the history of the Atlantic slave trade.
When to go
The dry season, November to May, is the main travel season: sunny, rain-free days around 30 degrees Celsius, a warm sea, and the best birdwatching, as migrants from Europe spend the winter here. From December to February the harmattan can bring a dry, dusty haze off the Sahara for a few days at a time. The rainy season runs from roughly late June to October, hot and humid with heavy downpours, when the countryside turns green and some beach hotels close. Mosquitoes, and with them malaria risk, peak during and just after the rains.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, and Banjul International Airport at Yundum is reached through Europe or another West African city. From Montreal (YUL), the usual pattern is one or two connections, via Brussels or another European hub, or via Dakar. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. The airport sits inland, about half an hour by road from the Kololi and Senegambia hotels and a little longer to Banjul itself.

Good to know before you go
Green tourist taxis wait outside the hotels and charge posted fixed fares, while the cheaper yellow-and-green taxis run shared town trips along set routes or take a private hire if you agree on the price first; minibuses known as gele-geles cover the main roads for very little. The currency is the dalasi; cards work in the larger hotels and some restaurants, but cash rules elsewhere, and ATMs are concentrated around Senegambia and Serrekunda. English is the official language, with Wolof and Mandinka widely spoken, so French helps less here than across the border in Senegal. Drink bottled water, and expect friendly approaches on the beach from hustlers known locally as bumsters: a polite, firm no thank you is usually enough.
