Conakry runs along a narrow peninsula reaching into the Atlantic, so the sea is never far away even when traffic on the main roads stands still. Guinea's capital is loud, crowded and warm, with the sprawling Madina market, the Grand Mosque, and fish grilling at roadside stands after dark, while the Îles de Los lie half an hour offshore for a quiet beach day. Montreal has a large Guinean community, so many travellers on this route are heading home to family, and French is spoken everywhere you will need it.
When to go
Conakry is one of the rainiest capitals in Africa, so timing matters. The dry season, November to April, is the time to go: sunny, hot and humid, with December to February often hazy from the harmattan wind off the Sahara. The rains start around May and peak in July and August, when downpours can last for hours and flood streets, and trips to the islands and the hills get harder. To see the waterfalls of the interior with water still in them, aim for the end of the rains in October or November.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada to Conakry International Airport at Gbessia. From Montreal (YUL), the common routings take one connection in Paris, Brussels or Casablanca, with Istanbul and Dakar as other options; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. The airport is inside the city, but Conakry's traffic is heavy, and the ride to Kaloum, the old downtown at the tip of the peninsula, can take an hour or more at peak times.
What to see and do
- A boat day to the Îles de Los, Kassa and Roume
- The Grand Mosque of Conakry
- Marché Madina, the city's largest market
- The Voile de la Mariée waterfall near Kindia
Good to know before you go
Shared yellow taxis run fixed routes along the main roads and are cheap but packed; moto-taxis are the fastest way through traffic, though accidents are common, so insist on a helmet if you take one. For comfort, have your hotel or family arrange a private driver, especially from the airport. The currency is the Guinean franc and you will carry thick stacks of notes, since cash is used almost everywhere and card acceptance is limited to the larger hotels. French is the official language, with Susu the everyday language in Conakry and Pular and Maninka widespread. Drink bottled water, take malaria prevention, and read the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before booking, as political demonstrations can turn tense quickly.
