Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's biggest city, a hot, humid port where dhows still crowd the harbour and the Indian Ocean sets the pace of daily life. Swahili culture runs deep here, from the smell of grilled seafood along the waterfront to the crush of the Kariakoo market, while the ferry to Zanzibar leaves from the heart of downtown. It is a busy, unpolished gateway to the coast, and the perfect place to start a Tanzanian adventure!

When to go

The long dry season from June to October is the most comfortable time, with lower humidity and easy access to safari parks inland. The short rains come in November, and the heavier long rains fall from March to May, when the heat and moisture peak. It is warm and tropical year round, so pack light and plan for strong midday sun.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Québec City or Montréal, so expect an overnight Atlantic crossing and at least one change of planes. Common routings connect through a European hub like Amsterdam, Paris, or Istanbul, or through a Gulf or African hub such as Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa on Ethiopian. Total travel time usually runs 20 hours or more, so build in a buffer for the connection.

What to see and do

  • Kariakoo Market
  • National Museum of Tanzania
  • Coco Beach (Oyster Bay)
  • Ferry to Zanzibar from the downtown terminal

Good to know before you go

The currency is the Tanzanian shilling, and cash is still king for markets and small vendors. For getting around, Uber and Bolt both work well and spare you the fare haggling; the three-wheeled bajaji (tuk-tuks) are handy for short hops, while dala-dala minibuses and the harbour ferries are cheap but can confuse first-time visitors. Swahili is the everyday language and English is widely understood; the city is generally welcoming, but keep valuables out of sight in crowds and use registered rides after dark.

Entry requirements and health

Visa on arrival or e-Visa

A visa is needed, and the easy part is you can usually get it right on arrival or online beforehand. Bring the fee and the right papers and you're set.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever proof only comes into play if you're arriving from a country that has it. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.

General orientation for a Canadian passport on a short tourist trip, not legal or medical advice. Confirm with official sources, and see a travel health clinic four to six weeks before departure.
