Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, a compact port city on the River Lagan where the shipyard that built the Titanic still marks the skyline with its two yellow cranes, Samson and Goliath. Its Victorian centre, red-brick terraces and lively Cathedral Quarter pubs are less than two hours by road from one of Europe's most striking coastlines, the basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway. The city has changed a great deal since the 1998 peace agreement, and its murals, museums and markets give visitors a direct look at its story.
When to go
Belfast has a mild, damp maritime climate, rarely very hot or very cold, with rain possible in any month, so a waterproof layer is always worth packing. May to September brings the longest days, with daylight lasting past 10 pm around midsummer, and the best conditions for the Causeway Coast. Around 12 July, parades and the bonfires of the night before bring road closures and some closed shops, so check the dates if you plan a summer trip. From mid-November the Christmas market fills the grounds of City Hall, and the rest of winter is quieter, darker and cheaper.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There are no nonstop flights from Canada to George Best Belfast City (BHD), which mostly handles flights from Great Britain and a handful of other routes. From Montreal (YUL) you usually cross the Atlantic to London or another hub and connect to a short flight into Belfast City; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg via Montreal or Toronto. A common alternative is to fly into Dublin and continue north by the Enterprise train or a direct coach, both about two hours. Belfast City airport is about 5 km east of the centre, and the Airport Express bus reaches downtown in roughly 15 minutes.
What to see and do

Good to know before you go
The centre is compact and walkable, and Translink runs the Metro buses and the Glider rapid-transit lines, which cross the city east to west and serve the Titanic Quarter; tickets are sold in the mLink app. Taxis are easy to book through local apps such as Value Cabs and fonaCAB, and Uber also operates; for the Causeway Coast, a guided day tour is simplest. The currency is the pound sterling, and notes printed by Northern Irish banks are sometimes refused in Great Britain, so spend them before you leave. Canadians need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), including when arriving overland from Dublin. Tap water is safe, and politics and religion are best left for locals to raise.
