Bujumbura spreads along the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest lakes on earth, with the mountains of the Democratic Republic of the Congo rising across the water. Burundi's largest city and economic capital (the political capital moved to Gitega in 2019) keeps a relaxed lakeside pace: sandy beaches north of the centre, hippos in the Rusizi delta, and evenings over grilled mukeke, the lake fish locals favour, and goat brochettes. Many Montreal families make this trip to see relatives, and French will carry you through most of it.
When to go
Bujumbura sits low by the lake, around 800 metres, so it is warmer and more humid than the hills of the interior, with highs near 30 degrees Celsius most of the year. The main dry season runs from June to August, sometimes into September, and it is the easiest time for beach days and road trips upcountry. The rains fall in two stretches, roughly October to December and February to May, with a shorter, less reliable lull around January. Storms are heavy but often brief, though they can wash out unpaved roads in the hills.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, so plan on at least one connection into Melchior Ndadaye International Airport. From Montreal (YUL), the main routings go via Brussels, which Montreal serves nonstop, or via Addis Ababa or Nairobi, with one or two connections being typical. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. The airport lies north of the city, roughly 20 minutes from the centre by road.

- The Livingstone-Stanley stone at Mugere
- The royal drum sanctuary at Gishora, near Gitega
Good to know before you go
Taxis are the usual way to get around; agree on the fare before getting in or have your hotel call a driver it trusts, since meters are not used and ride-hailing apps have little presence. The currency is the Burundian franc, cash is used for almost everything, foreign cards work in very few places, and clean, recent US dollar or euro notes are the easiest to exchange. Kirundi is spoken by nearly everyone, French is widely used in town and in business, and English is less common. Drink bottled water, carry your passport or a copy, and ask locally before swimming in the lake, since hippos and crocodiles live around the Rusizi delta. Check the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before booking, as political tension and the situation near the Congolese border affect where it is wise to go.
