Brazzaville faces Kinshasa across the Congo River, the two capitals so close that the towers of one are plainly visible from the riverbank of the other. The capital of the Republic of the Congo is the calmer, greener of the pair, with leafy avenues, the green-tiled Basilica of Sainte-Anne, the painting school of Poto-Poto, and in Bacongo, the sapeurs who turn a Sunday stroll into a fashion parade. Walk down to the rapids at the edge of town at sundown, when the river roars over the rocks and the terraces nearby fill up!
When to go
Brazzaville is hot and humid year-round, and the calendar turns on rain. The dry season, June to September, is the most comfortable, with frequently overcast skies, slightly cooler days and a lower river. The rainy season runs roughly from October to May, with intense afternoon storms, a slight easing around January and February, and the heaviest falls in November and again in March and April. Streets in the lower neighbourhoods can flood after a big storm, so leave slack in your plans during the wettest months.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada to Maya-Maya Airport. From Montreal (YUL), the usual routing is one connection in Paris, with Casablanca and Addis Ababa as alternatives; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto for two connections in all. Maya-Maya sits close to the centre, about 15 minutes by taxi outside rush hour. If you plan to continue to Kinshasa, the boat crossing from the river port known as the Beach requires a DRC visa and paperwork that goes more smoothly with a local contact helping.

Good to know before you go
Green taxis are everywhere and are the simplest way to get around; confirm the fare and destination before you set off, and have your hotel book a trusted driver for nights out. Ride-hailing coverage is thin, and the shared minibuses are cheap but crowded and hard to read for newcomers. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, cash dominates outside the large hotels, and euros are the easiest foreign currency to change. French is the official language, with Lingala and Kituba widely spoken, so Québécois visitors can manage everything in French. Drink bottled water, take malaria prevention, and do not photograph government buildings, the presidential area or anything military.
