Rabat is Morocco's capital, a calm, orderly city on the Atlantic at the mouth of the Bouregreg River, with Salé facing it on the opposite bank. It has the monuments of an imperial city without the crowds: the blue-and-white lanes of the Kasbah of the Udayas above the surf, the unfinished Hassan Tower, and the storks nesting in the ruins of the Chellah. Wide boulevards, a modern tramway and a riverside promenade make it one of the easiest Moroccan cities to explore at your own pace.

When to go

The Atlantic keeps Rabat milder than inland Morocco all year. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring warm, sunny days that suit long walks, and summer is warm rather than scorching, with a sea breeze and busy beaches. Winter, from December to February, is mild but brings most of the year's rain. During Ramadan, whose dates shift each year, the daytime pace slows and the city comes alive after sunset.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop to Rabat from Canada. From Montreal (YUL), the most direct option is often a nonstop flight to Casablanca followed by the train to Rabat with a change in Casablanca, about two hours in all from the airport; from Quebec City (YQB), add a connection through Montreal. You can also fly into Rabat-Salé airport itself with one or two connections through a European hub such as Paris. Rabat-Salé airport lies northeast of the city, about 20 minutes from the centre by taxi.

What to see and do

  • The Kasbah of the Udayas and its Andalusian garden
  • The Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V
  • The storks and Roman ruins of the Chellah
  • The medina and the carpet stalls of Rue des Consuls
  • The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
  • A rowboat crossing of the Bouregreg to Salé's medina

Good to know before you go

Rabat's tramway links the centre, the medina, the Agdal district and Salé across the river, and city buses fill in the rest; blue petits taxis are cheap for short trips, so ask the driver to run the meter. The centre and the medina are pleasant on foot, and the coastal corniche makes a good long walk at sunset. The currency is the Moroccan dirham: cards work in hotels, restaurants and modern shops, but the medina runs on cash. Arabic and Darija are the everyday languages and French is widely used in shops and offices, which makes Rabat easy for Québécois travellers; most visitors drink bottled water. Most mosques are closed to non-Muslims, although the Mausoleum of Mohammed V welcomes respectful visitors, and modest dress is appreciated throughout the medina.
