Djanet is an oasis town of palm gardens and earthen houses in Algeria's far southeast, set beneath the sandstone cliffs of the Tassili n'Ajjer. The plateau above it is a UNESCO-listed national park holding one of the world's largest collections of prehistoric rock art: thousands of paintings and engravings of giraffes, cattle herds and masked figures from the time when the Sahara was green. Most visitors come for a desert expedition with Tuareg guides, sleeping under the stars among eroded rock forests, red dunes and the occasional pool of water hidden at the bottom of a canyon.

When to go

The season runs from October to April, when days are warm and dry and the light is clear. December and January are the busiest months, but nights in the desert and on the plateau can drop close to freezing, so a real sleeping bag matters. From May to September the heat is extreme and most agencies stop running treks. The Sebiba, a Tuareg festival of drumming, song and dance listed by UNESCO, takes place in Djanet each year at Ashura, whose date follows the Islamic calendar.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no direct route from Canada; Djanet is reached through Algiers. From Montreal (YUL) there are nonstop flights to Algiers, followed by a domestic flight of a few hours south to Djanet; from Quebec City (YQB), you add a first leg to Montreal or connect through Paris. Check the domestic schedule before booking the international leg, and allow a night in Algiers if the connection is tight. Your agency normally meets you at the airport, which sits in the desert outside town, and handles the transfer.

What to see and do

  • The climb to Tamrit's ancient cypresses and the rock art of Sefar
  • The red dunes and stone arches of the Tadrart Rouge
  • The Crying Cows engraving just outside town
  • The guelta pools of the Essendilène canyon

Good to know before you go

There is no public transport into the desert: foreign visitors in Algeria's deep south travel with a licensed local agency, which provides the Tuareg guide, cook and 4x4 vehicles, plus donkeys to carry the gear on plateau treks. In town you can walk everywhere, and your agency or guesthouse can arrange a taxi. The currency is the Algerian dinar; cards are of little use here, so bring euros in cash to exchange, and expect to need a visa arranged in advance, usually with an invitation letter from your agency. Arabic and Tamahaq, the Tuareg language, are spoken locally, and French is widely understood. Djanet lies in a remote region close to the Libyan border, so check the Government of Canada's travel advice at travel.gc.ca before booking; on the ground, drink treated or bottled water, ask before photographing people, and never wet or touch the rock paintings to make them stand out.

Entry requirements and health

Visa required in advance

This one takes a bit more planning: you'll need a visa lined up ahead of time, usually through an embassy or consulate. Start early, since it can take a while.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water.
