Benghazi is Libya's second city and the gateway to Cyrenaica, the country's eastern half, a Mediterranean port with a long seafront corniche. Years of fighting left deep marks on its old centre and reconstruction has been under way since, while daily life plays out in the market lanes around Souq al-Jreed and on the waterfront once the evening cools. Most people flying here from Canada are visiting family, and those who come for history head east into the Green Mountain, where the ruins of Greek Cyrene see very few foreign visitors. Libya has been divided and unstable for more than a decade, so read the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before you book.
When to go
Benghazi has a Mediterranean climate, tempered by the sea. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are the most pleasant, with warm days and cool evenings, though spring is also when the ghibli, a hot, dust-laden wind out of the desert, is most likely to blow for a day or two. Summers are long, hot and dry, and winters are mild and bring most of the year's limited rain.
Getting there from Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada to Benina International Airport. From Montreal (YUL), the usual routing is one connection in Istanbul, which Montreal serves nonstop, with Tunis or Cairo as other possible connecting points. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto, which makes two connections in all. Benina lies east of the city, about half an hour by road, and a pickup arranged by your hotel, family or agency is the sensible way in.
What to see and do
- The Greek and Roman ruins of Cyrene in the Green Mountain
- Apollonia, Cyrene's ancient port on the coast at Susa
- The seaside ruins of Ptolemais at Tolmeita
- Souq al-Jreed, the city's traditional market
Good to know before you go
Getting around Benghazi means taxis and private drivers, ideally arranged through your hotel, your family or a licensed local agency; there is no public transit a visitor can realistically use, and hailing cars on the street is best avoided. Visitors who are not staying with family usually go through a licensed agency, which handles the visa sponsorship and arranges the guide and driver for trips to Cyrene. The currency is the Libyan dinar and this is a cash economy: foreign cards are rarely accepted, so bring clean US dollars or euros to exchange. Arabic is the language of daily life and English is limited outside hotels and businesses. Drink bottled water, dress conservatively, remember that alcohol is illegal throughout Libya, and never photograph checkpoints, soldiers or official buildings.
