Winter sun from Quebec City: the guide

The winter trip down south is practically a Quebec institution. It is also the market where prices swing the most: the same week in Cancun can cost twice as much depending on when you book and which week you travel. Here is how this market works and how to get the best of it. It is one of the markets we watch most closely out of Quebec City, and its prices follow a fairly predictable rhythm once you know it.

The price calendar for sun destinations

Demand dictates everything. The holiday weeks and March break are the peaks of the year: prices are at their maximum and almost never come down, so those dates should be booked as early as possible, starting in the fall. Conversely, late January, early February and late April offer the same sun for much less.

November and early December are the best-kept secret: hurricane season is ending, hotels reopen fully and prices have not yet hit their holiday peak.

Picking your region by month

Not all sun destinations are equal at the same time. In deep winter, the southern Caribbean (Aruba, Curaçao) and Mexico's Pacific coast offer the most reliable weather. Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Riviera Maya are the most affordable, with a slight risk of cold fronts in January. Florida is the easiest to reach but can be cool in January; it is gorgeous in March and April.

June through November is hurricane season in the Caribbean: prices drop, and it is a bet you take knowingly, ideally with good cancellation insurance.

All-inclusive package or flight only?

For a classic beach week, the all-inclusive package is often unbeatable, especially from Quebec City where charter flights leave directly for the popular destinations in winter. For a freer trip, in an Airbnb or moving around, flight plus accommodation compares favourably, especially outside peak weeks.

The right reflex is to price both options for the same dates before deciding. A very low flight-only fare can flip the math, and that is exactly the kind of gap a price alert helps you catch.

Southern traps to avoid

Check the arrival airport and the transfer distance: some hotels in the Dominican Republic are a two-hour drive from the cheapest airport. Also check what the fare includes: on southbound flights, the checked bag is often extra even on major carriers. And if you travel during March break, book airport parking in advance, it fills up.
