When to book a flight to pay less
"When is the best time to book?" is the question we get most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on the destination and the season, but some windows work far better than others. Here is what prices actually show, and the myths that cost people money.
Booking windows that work
There is no magic day, but there are price zones. As a rule of thumb:
- United States and Canada : book one to three months before departure. Closer in, prices climb fast; further out, they simply have not come down yet.
- Europe : aim for two to six months ahead, more for July and August. The good summer fares sell out starting in winter.
- Winter sun destinations : book early, ideally in the fall. Southbound flights from Quebec fill up fast and rarely get cheaper as the holidays and spring break approach.
- Peak periods (Christmas, spring break, summer) : the earlier the better. On those dates, waiting for a last-minute drop is almost always a losing bet.
Myths that cost you money
No, booking on Tuesday at midnight does not unlock a secret discount: prices move every day, at every hour, with supply and demand. No, private browsing does not reveal hidden fares: airlines do not raise prices because you looked twice. These legends make people wait while the real deals pass by.
What actually makes a price drop: a fare war between airlines, a plane filling more slowly than expected, or a seat sale. None of these announce themselves in advance, which is exactly why watching prices beats any calendar.
Last minute is rarely your friend
On most routes out of Quebec, prices climb in the last two or three weeks before departure, because the remaining seats sell to travellers who have no choice. Last-minute deals exist, but they are the exception, not the rule, and they require total flexibility on destination and dates.
A real deal will not wait for you
When a fare drops well below a route's usual price, it typically lasts one to three days, sometimes just hours. The right reflex: confirm the fare is real on Google Flights, check the total price with bags, then decide quickly. If you hesitate for more than two days, the fare will probably be gone.
This is where price alerts change the game: instead of guessing the right moment, you are told when it arrives. Set your target price on a destination, and the moment to book comes to you.
