Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Cuba: how to choose
· Vol Spot

Three destinations dominate southbound departures from Quebec City and Montreal, and they look much alike in a beach photo. On the ground, the experience differs considerably.
Here is what actually separates them, so you can choose on something other than this week's price.
Mexico: the most versatile
The Riviera Maya combines modern beach resorts, major archaeological sites and cenotes, which makes it the easiest destination if you want more than a beach. You can spend a week there without doing the same thing twice.
It is also the best served: many flights, plenty of competition, and therefore fares that drop regularly. Tourist infrastructure is solid and English is widely understood in tourist areas.
The downside is scale. Cancun and the Riviera are heavily developed and heavily visited, and part of the coast feels more like a resort strip than a place. If you want quiet, aim further south toward Tulum or change coasts.
The Dominican Republic: best beach for the money
Punta Cana is the benchmark for affordable all-inclusive travel from Quebec, with a density of hotels that keeps prices low all season and beaches that deliver what they promise.
It is the simplest destination if your goal is precisely to organise nothing: flight, transfer, hotel, all of it well drilled, and the trip settled in one transaction.
In exchange, what exists outside the resorts is more limited than in Mexico. Puerto Plata and Samana offer more contact with the country, with slightly less hotel choice. If the idea of staying on the property all week bores you, look that way.
Cuba: the most different
Cuba does not offer the same thing. Varadero works as a conventional beach resort, but the interest of the country is elsewhere: Havana, Trinidad, the Vinales valley, and a way of travelling much closer to the ground.
Expectations need adjusting. Hotels are generally more modest than Mexican equivalents at the same category, supply can be irregular, and internet stays limited and expensive. These are known facts, not surprises.
In exchange you get a destination unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean, where casas particulares put you up in family homes for a fraction of hotel prices. Bring cash: cards issued by certain banks do not work, so check before you leave.
Choose by the trip you want
The advertised price separates these three poorly. What separates them is the kind of stay.
- First time south, with children : Dominican Republic or the Riviera Maya. Everything is arranged, flights are plentiful, and nothing requires organising.
- You want to explore as much as rest : Mexico. It is the only one of the three where excursions genuinely justify leaving the beach.
- You want to see the country, not just the coast : Cuba. Accept the lower comfort and you get the most memorable trip of the three.
- You want the lowest price this week : Look at all three. The order changes weekly with the flights available, and there is no permanent winner.
The detail that changes the price
On these three destinations the gap between leaving from Quebec City and leaving from Montreal is often small, because charter flights also operate out of Jean Lesage in winter. The drive to Trudeau is not always worth it.
Vol Spot destination pages show both departures side by side with the real gap for the day. On southbound routes especially, check before taking the drive for granted.
