The Quebec City Jean Lesage airport (YQB) guide
Jean Lesage is our home airport, and one you learn to love: big enough to fly far, small enough to get from the car to the gate in half an hour on a good day. Here is how to get the most out of it, especially if it is your first departure from Quebec City.
How early to arrive
The official recommendations remain two hours before a domestic or US-bound flight and three hours before an international one. In practice YQB moves much faster than a big airport, but rush periods exist: the grouped morning departures to the hubs and the waves of winter charter flights can stretch the security line. During March break or the holidays, take the recommendation seriously.
Getting there and parking
The airport is about fifteen minutes from downtown by car. Taxis to downtown Quebec City run at a flat rate and ride-hailing apps also serve the airport; public transit remains limited, so plan your ride rather than counting on it at the last minute.
For parking, the airport offers short and long-term zones, and booking online in advance is generally cheaper than showing up without a reservation. During March break and the holidays the lots genuinely fill up: book as soon as the trip is confirmed. Also compare with the cost of a round trip by taxi; for a getaway of a few days, the taxi sometimes wins.
Security and customs: what to expect
Security applies the usual Canadian rules: liquids of 100 ml or less in a one-litre clear bag, electronics accessible, and the eternal reminder that power banks go in the cabin, never in the hold. YQB has no US preclearance: for the United States, customs happens at Montreal or Toronto preclearance if your itinerary connects there, otherwise on arrival at the first American airport.
Coming back from abroad, Canadian customs at YQB is generally quick: one of the real pleasures of returning through a small airport.
The regular's little tricks
Check in online the day before and travel with the boarding pass on your phone, it eliminates a line. If your flight leaves very early, check your airline's counter opening hours: in a small airport they do not open at midnight. Food options past security are decent but limited, so plan for long gaps. And keep an eye on the departures board the day before: when a storm is coming, airlines often let you move the flight earlier or later at no charge.
