Jet lag: arriving in decent shape after a flight to Europe

The Quebec to Europe flight leaves in the evening and lands in the morning, after five or six hours of sleep at best. You arrive at the start of a full day while your body is in the middle of the night.

Jet lag resolves at roughly a day per hour of time difference if you leave it alone, or considerably faster if you help it. The difference comes down to a few simple decisions, most of them made before takeoff.

Eastbound is the hard direction

Travelling east, which is to say to Europe, requires moving your internal clock forward, something the body does less readily than moving it back. That is why the trip home from Europe almost always goes better than the trip out.

In practice, Quebec City to Paris imposes six hours forward at once. Going to bed an hour earlier on the two or three nights before departure closes part of that gap before you even leave, and it is the highest-return item on this list.

On the plane: sleep, or do not bother trying

On an overnight flight to Europe the only goal is sleep, even poor sleep. Set your watch to destination time at takeoff, skip the meal service if you ate before boarding, and make sleep possible: eye mask, earplugs, a headrest that actually holds your head sideways.

Alcohol helps you fall asleep and degrades the sleep you get, which makes it a bad trade on a short overnight flight. Water genuinely matters: the cabin is very dry, and dehydration amplifies everything that feels like fatigue.

The first day decides the week

On arrival, the nap is the most expensive temptation. One hour passes, three hours wreck the night that follows and put you back where you started. If you truly cannot stay upright, set a twenty-minute timer and then go outside.

Going outside is the key part: daylight is the main signal that resets the internal clock. A walk on the morning you land beats anything else, even when the motivation is not there.

Meals as anchors

Eating at local times from the first day helps the body reset, even without appetite. Skipping dinner because it is midnight in your head delays the adjustment.

Keep caffeine to the local morning. A 4pm coffee after a sleepless flight gets paid back at bedtime, which is precisely what you are trying to protect.

What this changes when you book

A flight landing in the morning leaves a full day of light to reset against, which is markedly better than arriving in the evening. On a long-haul trip that scheduling detail is often worth more than a few dollars between two fares.

Same logic coming home: returning a day before work starts rather than the night before leaves room to absorb the worst of it at home.
