Santa Cruz de la Sierra is Bolivia's largest city and its main international gateway, a warm lowland city at about 400 metres that looks nothing like the country's Andean postcards. Its ring roads circle Plaza 24 de Septiembre, where locals linger under the trees beside the brick cathedral, and its bakeries turn out cuñapé, a cassava and cheese bread. From here, roads lead east to the Jesuit mission towns of the Chiquitania, whose painted wooden churches still host baroque music, and west to the cloud forests of Amboró around Samaipata.

When to go

Santa Cruz is hot and humid much of the year. The dry season, roughly May to September, is the most comfortable and the best for the missions and Amboró, though surazos, cold southern winds, can drop temperatures sharply for a few days, and August and September can bring haze from agricultural burning. The wet season, November to March, means heat and heavy downpours. Carnival, in February or March, is the city's biggest party.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

Viru Viru is Bolivia's main international airport. From Montreal (YUL), expect one or two connections, usually through Miami, Panama City, Bogotá, Lima or São Paulo; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. The airport is about 16 km north of the centre, around 30 minutes by taxi. Domestic flights continue to La Paz and Sucre; if you head to La Paz, plan for the jump to well over 3,500 metres.

Good to know before you go

Use radio taxis or ones called by your hotel and agree on the fare first; ride-hailing apps such as inDrive are widely used, while micros (city buses) are cheap but hard to follow. For the missions and Samaipata, join a tour or take long-distance buses and shared taxis, since distances are long. Bolivia uses the boliviano, and the currency situation has been unsettled in recent years, with dollar shortages and gaps between official and street rates, so check current conditions and carry small notes; cards work mainly in hotels. Spanish is the main language. Drink bottled water, and see a travel clinic about yellow fever vaccination. Protests and road blockades can close highways without warning, so check the Government of Canada's travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before booking and keep slack in your plans.
