Caracas fills a long mountain valley about 900 metres above sea level, cut off from the Caribbean by the green ridge of El Ávila, also known as Waraira Repano National Park. When to go
Its altitude keeps Caracas mild all year, with warm days and comfortable evenings rather than coastal heat. The dry season runs roughly December to April, when the views from El Ávila are clearest, and the rainy season from about May to November brings afternoon storms. Whatever the season, check the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) when you book and again shortly before you leave, since conditions can change quickly.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Quebec City or Montreal, and international flights to Venezuela are limited, with routes suspended or added at short notice. Expect one or two connections through a Latin American or European hub, and confirm close to departure that every leg is still operating. Simón Bolívar International Airport is in Maiquetía on the coast, roughly 30 to 60 minutes from the city by a mountain highway; arrange a pickup in advance through your hotel or a trusted contact rather than taking a taxi from the curb.

The Caracas Metro covers much of the city, but given the crime risk, most visitors rely on drivers arranged through their hotel or a trusted contact, or on locally run ride-hailing apps, and avoid hailing taxis on the street or walking after dark. Money is the main practical puzzle: the bolívar circulates alongside US dollars, prices can be quoted in either, and foreign cards may not work, so look up the current situation before you go and bring cash in small, clean bills. Spanish is the language and English is not widely spoken. Drink bottled water, keep your phone out of sight, and keep in mind that Canadian consular help in Venezuela may be limited.
