Barranquilla is Colombia's big Caribbean port, built where the Río Magdalena reaches the sea after its long run down from the Andes. It is a working, unpretentious city known across the country for its Carnaval, its football and its music, and it is Shakira's hometown, with a giant statue of the singer on the riverside Gran Malecón. Spend a few days eating your way through arepas de huevo and butifarras, then follow the coast: Cartagena is about two hours west and Santa Marta about two hours east.

When to go

Barranquilla is hot all year, but December to April is the drier, breezier season, when the trade winds take the edge off the heat. That window also holds Carnaval, held over the four days before Ash Wednesday (February or early March) and recognized by UNESCO, with the Batalla de Flores parade opening the main festivities; book rooms months ahead. The rainy months, roughly May to June and September to November, bring short, violent downpours that turn some streets into fast-flowing torrents called arroyos.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

From Montreal (YUL), Ernesto Cortissoz Airport (BAQ) is usually one connection away, through Bogotá, Panama City or a Florida hub such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale; from Quebec City (YQB), expect two connections, starting with a hop to Montreal, Toronto or a US gateway. The airport is in neighbouring Soledad, about 30 to 45 minutes from El Prado and the north of the city by taxi. Cartagena (CTG) and Santa Marta (SMR) are close enough by road that it is worth comparing fares to all three airports.

What to see and do

  • The Gran Malecón del Río at sunset
  • Barrio Abajo, the old neighbourhood where Carnaval traditions live on
  • The historic pier and beaches at Puerto Colombia

Good to know before you go

The Transmetro rapid bus line runs along the main corridors, but most visitors get around by taxi or by app, with Uber, DiDi and inDrive all widely used; agree on the fare before getting into a street taxi. The currency is the Colombian peso, cards work in malls and most restaurants in the north of the city, and cash is handy for street food and corner shops. Spanish is the language, spoken fast and with a strong costeño accent. During a heavy storm, stay where you are until it passes and never try to cross an arroyo on foot or by car, since the current can carry off vehicles. Most travellers stick to bottled water, and petty theft is common, so keep your phone out of sight on the street.

Entry requirements and health

No visa needed

Good news: with a Canadian passport you can just show up for a short tourist stay, no visa needed. Keep an eye on how long you're allowed to stay so your trip fits.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
