Cuiabá is the hot, spread-out capital of Mato Grosso, near the geographic centre of South America, and most visitors use it as a launch pad. To the south lies the Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland, where capybaras, caimans, giant otters and jaguars live along the Transpantaneira road; to the northeast rise the red sandstone cliffs and waterfalls of Chapada dos Guimarães. Save an evening for the city's river-fish cooking, from fried pacu ribs to Maria Isabel, rice cooked with sun-dried beef.
When to go
The dry season, roughly May to September, is the time for the Pantanal: water retreats, wildlife gathers along the banks, and July to October is the best window for jaguars around Porto Jofre. The wet season, about November to March, floods much of the wetland and turns dirt roads to mud, though the landscape is at its greenest and lodges are quieter. Cuiabá is one of Brazil's hottest cities, regularly passing 40°C in September and October, and smoke from seasonal fires can haze the sky in August and September.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada. From Montreal (YUL), you typically fly to São Paulo with one stop (Toronto, a US hub or Panama City), then take a domestic flight of about two hours to Cuiabá; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Brasília is the other common domestic connection. The airport is in neighbouring Várzea Grande, around 20 minutes from central Cuiabá, and most Pantanal lodges and Chapada tours pick up there.
What to see and do
- Wildlife lodges along the Transpantaneira road
- Jaguar-spotting boat trips around Porto Jofre
- Véu de Noiva falls and the sandstone cliffs of Chapada dos Guimarães
- Snorkelling the clear springs of Bom Jardim, near Nobres
Good to know before you go
In Cuiabá, Uber and 99 are the easiest way around, with taxis at the airport and malls; city buses are hard to use without Portuguese. Do the Pantanal and Chapada dos Guimarães with a lodge package or guided tour that includes transport, since the Transpantaneira is a dirt road crossed by dozens of wooden bridges and spotting wildlife takes a trained eye. The currency is the Brazilian real; cards work almost everywhere in the city, but carry cash for rural stops. English is rare, so a translation app helps. Drink bottled or filtered water, pack strong insect repellent, and ask a travel clinic about yellow fever vaccination.
Entry requirements and health
e-Visa required
You'll need a visa for this one, but the whole thing is done online before you go. Apply a little ahead of your trip and travel with the approval in hand.
Vaccines and health
Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
