St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders and named for King Louis IX, and its founders still lend their names to Laclede's Landing and Chouteau Avenue. The skyline belongs to the stainless-steel Gateway Arch on the Mississippi, while Forest Park, site of the 1904 World's Fair, holds an art museum, a history museum and a zoo that all charge no general admission. Add the Italian bakeries of The Hill, frozen custard on old Route 66 and a deep blues tradition, and there is plenty to fill a long weekend.
When to go
Spring (April to early June) and fall (September and October) are the most comfortable seasons, with mild days and Forest Park at its best. Summers are hot and humid, often above 32°C, with strong thunderstorms, and spring is tornado season in the region, so take weather alerts seriously. Winters are cold and grey with occasional snow and ice. Baseball season runs from April to September at Busch Stadium, and Soulard's Mardi Gras festivities, among the largest in the country, fill the weeks before Lent.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
From Montreal (YUL), St. Louis is usually one connection away, through a hub such as Chicago, Atlanta, Toronto or Washington; from Quebec City (YQB), plan on one or two. Flights to the US from Montreal and Toronto go through US preclearance, so you clear customs before boarding, and Canadian citizens need a passport but no visa. From the airport, the MetroLink light rail runs straight to downtown in roughly 30 to 40 minutes, stopping at the Central West End and Forest Park along the way.
What to see and do
- The tram ride to the top of the Gateway Arch
- Forest Park's free art museum, history museum and zoo
- City Museum, a former shoe factory turned climbable playground
- The mosaics of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis
- Toasted ravioli on The Hill and frozen custard on Route 66
Good to know before you go
MetroLink's two light-rail lines connect the airport, downtown, the Central West End, Forest Park and the Delmar Loop, Metro buses fill in the rest, and Uber and Lyft are easy to find across the city. The currency is the US dollar, cards are accepted everywhere, and restaurants expect a tip of 18 to 20 percent. Downtown can feel empty after office hours, so at night take a rideshare between neighbourhoods instead of walking long stretches. Take the summer heat seriously and carry water on the riverfront and in Forest Park. Try the local St. Louis-style pizza, cracker-thin and topped with Provel cheese, with gooey butter cake for dessert.
