Yellowstone was the world's first national park, a high volcanic plateau where more than half of the planet's active geysers erupt alongside boiling mud pots, rainbow-coloured hot springs and herds of bison that stop traffic on the roads. The small town of West Yellowstone, Montana, sits right at the park's west entrance, a grid of motels, outfitters and diners about an hour's drive from Old Faithful. Staying there puts the geyser basins, the Madison River and the Grand Prismatic Spring within a short drive each morning.
When to go
Summer, from mid-June to August, is when every park road is open and when the West Yellowstone airport has its seasonal flights, but it is also when traffic and parking at Old Faithful are at their worst. September is quieter, with elk bugling in the meadows and crisp mornings, though snow can fall in any month at this altitude of about 2,000 metres. Park roads open in stages from mid-April to late May and close to regular vehicles in early November. From mid-December to mid-March, the park is reached from West Yellowstone only by guided snowmobile or snowcoach, a very different trip in deep cold.
Getting there from Quebec City
Yellowstone Airport (WYS), just outside West Yellowstone, is a small seasonal airport with flights only in summer, usually from Salt Lake City, so from Quebec City (YQB) or Montreal (YUL) count on two or three connections: a first leg to Toronto or a US hub, then Salt Lake City, then the short hop to the park. The year-round alternative is Bozeman (BZN), reached through Denver, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City or Seattle and about an hour and 45 minutes north of West Yellowstone by road through the Gallatin Canyon. Montreal and Toronto have US preclearance, so when you fly through either you clear customs before boarding, and Canadians need no visa.
What to see and do
- Old Faithful, the Upper Geyser Basin and the Old Faithful Inn
- Grand Prismatic Spring from the Fairy Falls trail overlook
- The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its Lower Falls
- Bison, elk and wolf watching in the Hayden and Lamar valleys
- The travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs
- Fly fishing on the Madison River
Good to know before you go
There is no public transit inside Yellowstone and the Grand Loop Road runs about 230 kilometres, so without your own vehicle the practical option is the guided bus and van tours that leave West Yellowstone daily in summer; the town itself is small enough to walk end to end. Lodging inside the park books up close to a year ahead. Cell signal is patchy in the park, so download offline maps and check your carrier's US roaming add-on before you go. Stay on the boardwalks in thermal areas, where the crust can be thin over scalding water, and keep at least 91 metres from bears and wolves and 23 metres from bison and elk. Bear spray cannot travel in airline baggage, so buy or rent it in town; the currency is the US dollar and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
