Asheville sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, a small city where Art Deco downtown streets give way to forested ridges within a few minutes' drive. It grew up as a mountain resort, and the Vanderbilt family's Biltmore Estate still anchors its south side, while the South Slope and the River Arts District carry the newer story of breweries, studios and Appalachian cooking. Days here tend to split between an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway and a brewery patio downtown, an easy rhythm to settle into.

When to go

At about 650 metres of elevation, Asheville is cooler than the Carolina lowlands, with warm, humid summers broken by afternoon thunderstorms. October is the headline month: fall colour works its way down from the high ridges to the valleys, and hotels fill up on fall weekends, so book early. April and May bring wildflowers and mild hiking weather, and rhododendrons bloom along the higher stretches of the Parkway around June. Winters are fairly mild in town, but ice and snow close the high sections of the Parkway for days or weeks at a time.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Quebec. From Montreal (YUL), Asheville is usually one connection away, most often through Charlotte, Atlanta or another US hub; from Quebec City (YQB), expect one or two connections, through Montreal, Toronto or a US hub. Flights to the US from Montreal and Toronto clear American customs before departure (preclearance), so you land as a domestic passenger, and Canadian citizens need a passport but no visa. Asheville Regional Airport is about 25 minutes south of downtown by taxi or Uber.

What to see and do

  • The Blue Ridge Parkway to Craggy Gardens and Mount Mitchell

Good to know before you go

Downtown Asheville is compact and walkable, ART city buses reach West Asheville and Biltmore Village, and Uber and Lyft cover the rest of town. The Parkway, the waterfalls and the high trailheads are beyond any bus line, so a guided day tour is the practical way to see them if you are not driving. The currency is the US dollar, cards work everywhere, sales tax is added at the register, and a tip of 18 to 20 percent is expected at sit-down restaurants. Black bears live around the city, so never leave food out at a picnic or camp site. Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding across the region in September 2024, and some Parkway sections and trails closed for long-term repairs, so check the National Park Service's road status before planning a drive.
