Santarém sits where the clear, blue-green Tapajós River flows into the muddy Amazon, and from the waterfront you can watch the two run side by side for kilometres before they mix. Founded in the 17th century, it is one of the oldest towns in the Brazilian Amazon, a relaxed river port in Pará with boats loading at the docks and markets piled with river fish. Most travellers come for Alter do Chão, a village up the Tapajós whose white-sand river beaches come as a surprise this deep in the rainforest.
When to go
It is hot and humid all year, so the river decides the season. From roughly August to December the Tapajós drops, uncovering long white beaches at Alter do Chão, including the sandbar of Ilha do Amor; this is the driest stretch and the best time to swim. From roughly January to June heavy rains raise the water, the beaches disappear, and boat trips through flooded forest take their place. In September, Alter do Chão holds the Çairé, a traditional festival of procession, music and dance.
Getting there from Montreal
Expect two or three connections. From Montreal (YUL), the common routing goes to São Paulo or Brasília, through Toronto, a US hub or Panama City, then on to Santarém, sometimes via Belém or Manaus; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. The airport is about 15 km from the centre, and Alter do Chão is about 35 km away by taxi or bus. Riverboats also connect Santarém with Belém and Manaus, a slow trip of a few days in a hammock.
What to see and do
- The meeting of the Tapajós and Amazon rivers
- The white-sand river beaches of Alter do Chão and Ilha do Amor
- Forest trails and giant samaúma trees in the Tapajós National Forest
Good to know before you go
The centre and waterfront are walkable, and taxis, mototaxis and ride-hailing apps cover the rest; city buses reach Alter do Chão in about an hour. Boat trips to the meeting of the waters, the Tapajós National Forest and nearby lakes are easiest to book with guides in Alter do Chão. The currency is the Brazilian real; cards work in town, but carry cash for boat operators and small communities. Portuguese is spoken and English is rare. Drink bottled or filtered water, use insect repellent, and see a travel clinic about yellow fever vaccination. Try tacacá, a hot tucupi broth with shrimp and tingling jambu leaves, and grilled tambaqui.
Entry requirements and health
e-Visa required
You'll need a visa for this one, but the whole thing is done online before you go. Apply a little ahead of your trip and travel with the approval in hand.
Vaccines and health
Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
