Tampa sits at the head of Tampa Bay on Florida's Gulf Coast, a sprawling, sunny city with a walkable core along the Hillsborough River. Its most distinctive corner is Ybor City, the old cigar-making district built by Cuban, Spanish and Italian immigrants, where brick factories, wrought-iron balconies and the Tampa version of the Cuban sandwich still set the tone. Across the bay, St. Petersburg and the barrier-island beaches of Clearwater and Pass-a-Grille add white sand and sunsets over the Gulf.

When to go

November to April is the dry, mild season and the most popular time for Canadians, with sunny days between about 22 and 28°C, though a cold front can bring a few cool days in January. Late January brings Gasparilla, when a pirate ship sails into the bay and a costumed flotilla and parade take over the city. From June to September it is hot and humid, with thunderstorms and frequent lightning nearly every afternoon, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, so watch the forecasts closely in late summer and fall. The Gulf is at its warmest for swimming from June to October.

Good to know before you go

Downtown Tampa, the Riverwalk, the Channel District and Ybor City are linked by the TECO Line streetcar and the Pirate Water Taxi on the river, shared e-scooters handle short hops, and HART buses run across the city. Beyond that, the bay area is spread out and built around the car, so Uber and Lyft are the practical way to reach the beaches; in Pinellas County, the SunRunner rapid bus links downtown St. Pete with St. Pete Beach. The currency is the US dollar, cards are accepted everywhere, and tips of 18 to 20 percent are expected in restaurants. On Gulf beaches, shuffle your feet as you wade to avoid stepping on stingrays, and get out of the water as soon as you hear thunder.
