Rodrigues is the small, quiet outer island of Mauritius, a hilly speck of land some 560 kilometres east of the main island, ringed by a lagoon more than twice the size of the island itself. Life follows the fishing boats and the Saturday market in Port Mathurin, the tiny capital, where stalls sell dried octopus, chili pickles and homemade preserves. Most visitors stay in small hotels and guesthouses run by Rodriguan families, and spend their days on coastal paths, in empty coves and out on the lagoon!
When to go
Rodrigues is warm year round and somewhat drier than Mauritius, with a near-constant sea breeze. The cooler months from May to October bring steady trade winds, comfortable hiking weather and the strongest wind for kitesurfing, while October to December is warm and calmer, good for time on the lagoon. January to April is hot and humid and forms the main cyclone season, when a storm can ground flights and halt boats for days.
Getting there from Montreal
Rodrigues is reached only through Mauritius. From Montreal (YUL), plan one or two connections to Mauritius, typically via Paris, Dubai or Johannesburg, then a domestic flight of about an hour and a half east to Rodrigues; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. A passenger and cargo ship also sails from Port Louis, but the crossing takes more than a day and sailings are infrequent. Plaine Corail airport is in the southwest of the island, roughly 45 minutes by road from Port Mathurin.
What to see and do
- The coastal walk from Graviers to Trou d'Argent
- A boat trip across the lagoon to the Île aux Cocos bird reserve
- The giant tortoises and limestone cave of the François Leguat Reserve
- Kitesurfing at Mourouk
Good to know before you go
Local buses leave from the station in Port Mathurin and reach most villages, but services thin out by late afternoon, so plan your return early; taxis can be booked through your guesthouse, and many visitors rent a scooter or simply walk, since the coastal trails show the island at its best. The currency is the Mauritian rupee: there are ATMs in Port Mathurin, but carry cash for markets, small restaurants and boat trips. Rodriguan Creole is the everyday language, French is widely understood and English is official. Fresh water is scarce here, so use it sparingly and drink bottled water. Try the octopus curry and the tourte rodriguaise, a sweet tart filled with coconut or papaya, and wear water shoes in the lagoon to protect your feet and the coral.
