Santiago de los Caballeros is the Dominican Republic's second city and the working heart of the Cibao, the fertile valley that grows much of the country's tobacco and gave it merengue típico. Life here runs on commerce rather than resorts: cigar rollers at their benches, families on the steps of the Monumento at sunset, and street stalls frying yaroa, the city's own loaded fries, late into the night. It is also the natural base for Jarabacoa, a little over an hour away among the pine forests and rivers of the Cordillera Central.

When to go

Santiago sits inland, away from the sea breeze, so its days run hotter than on the coast, often above 30°C. December to April is the driest and most comfortable stretch, and on Sundays in February the carnival fills the streets with lechones, masked dancers in spiked, colourful costumes. Short, heavy downpours arrive from about May and return in the fall, and the June to November hurricane season applies, though storms usually hit the coasts harder than the valley.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

From Montreal (YUL), Santiago is usually one connection away, most often through a US hub such as New York or Miami; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto, which makes two connections the norm. Canada's seasonal sun flights lean toward Puerto Plata (POP), about an hour north by road, so compare both airports before booking. Cibao International Airport lies east of the city, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the centre by taxi or Uber.

Good to know before you go

Local transit means carros públicos, shared sedans on fixed routes at a small flat fare, and guaguas (minibuses); both are cheap but crowded and confusing at first, so most visitors use Uber or a taxi called by the hotel. Intercity coaches, Caribe Tours being the best known, link Santiago with Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata, and guaguas climb to Jarabacoa. The currency is the Dominican peso; cards work in malls, hotels and chain restaurants, but keep cash for colmados and street food. Spanish is the language, and English is far less common than in the beach resorts. Drink bottled water, and note that restaurant bills already include tax and a 10 percent service charge.
