Marsh Harbour is the main town of the Abacos, a chain of islands and cays in the northern Bahamas wrapped around the sheltered Sea of Abaco, a favourite cruising ground for sailors and small-boat captains. Most people come for the water: short ferry rides lead to settlements on the outer cays founded by Loyalists in the 1780s, such as Hope Town on Elbow Cay with its red-and-white striped lighthouse, and Man-O-War Cay, where building wooden boats is a family trade. Hurricane Dorian struck Abaco as a Category 5 storm in September 2019 and caused heavy damage in Marsh Harbour and on the cays, and the area has been rebuilding since.

When to go

Winter and spring, roughly December to May, are dry and sunny, though cold fronts can bring cool, windy spells in January and February that make crossings choppy. March to June is the favourite boating season, with settled weather and warming water. Summer is hot and calm, with sailing regattas around Bahamian Independence Day on 10 July, and hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal. Marsh Harbour's airport has direct flights from South Florida and from Nassau, so from Montreal (YUL) you usually connect once through a US hub such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale, or twice through Toronto and Nassau; from Quebec City (YQB), expect two connections. The airport is a short taxi ride from town and from the docks where ferries leave for Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Great Guana Cay. Green Turtle Cay is reached from a ferry dock further north, near Treasure Cay.

What to see and do

  • Boating and snorkelling on the Sea of Abaco

Good to know before you go

Getting around Abaco is mostly by water: scheduled ferries run from Marsh Harbour to Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay and Great Guana Cay, and renting a small boat for a few days is common among confident boaters, while on the cays people walk or use golf carts (Hope Town's narrow lanes are closed to most cars). On mainland Abaco there are taxis but no buses or ride-hailing apps, so ask your lodging to book a driver for longer trips. The Bahamian dollar is pegged one to one to the US dollar and both are used; carry cash for ferries, small shops and food stands, as cards are not taken everywhere. English is spoken, driving is on the left, and most visitors drink bottled or filtered water, since many buildings rely on cisterns. If you take a boat out, respect the no-wake zones in the harbours and check the tide before crossing the shallow banks.
