Governor's Harbour is the small, unhurried administrative centre of Eleuthera, a long and very thin Bahamian island where the deep blue Atlantic and the calm, pale waters of the Bight of Eleuthera are often only a short walk apart. The town climbs a hill above its harbour in a jumble of old clapboard houses, churches and the 19th-century Haynes Library, with a causeway leading out to tiny Cupid's Cay. Pink-tinged Atlantic beaches are a few minutes' drive away, and on Friday evenings much of the island seems to gather at the fish fry by the water.

When to go

December to April is the dry season, with sunny days and the island's busiest stretch, though winter cold fronts can bring a few cool, windy days and rough Atlantic swells. May and June are warm, calm and quieter, and Gregory Town's Pineapple Festival lands in early June. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with peak risk from August to October, when some guesthouses and restaurants close for a few weeks. Water temperatures dip to the low to mid 20s Celsius in midwinter, so summer is better if you mostly want to swim.

Getting there from Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal. Governor's Harbour's small airport is served mainly from Nassau, with some flights from South Florida, so from Montreal (YUL) you will usually connect once or twice, through a US hub such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale or through Toronto and Nassau; from Quebec City (YQB), expect two connections. If you are staying in the north of the island or on Harbour Island, North Eleuthera airport is the better arrival point. The airport is a short taxi ride north of town, and your lodging can book one to meet you.

What to see and do

  • Governor's Harbour's hillside old town, the Haynes Library and Cupid's Cay
  • The Friday night fish fry by the harbour
  • The Glass Window Bridge, where the Atlantic meets the Bight
  • Harbour Island and its pink-sand beach, by water taxi from North Eleuthera
  • Lighthouse Beach at the island's southern tip

Good to know before you go

Eleuthera has no public buses and no ride-hailing apps, and the island stretches roughly 175 km along one main road, the Queen's Highway, so plan how you will move before you arrive: taxis meet flights and can be hired by the day for sightseeing, and many guesthouses arrange drivers or island tours. The Bahamian dollar is pegged one to one to the US dollar and both circulate; cards work at most hotels and larger restaurants, but fish fries, roadside stands and small shops want cash, and ATMs are few, so take out enough in Governor's Harbour. English is spoken and traffic drives on the left. Much of the island's water comes from cisterns or reverse osmosis, so drink bottled or filtered water. Swim with care on the Atlantic side, where surf and currents can be strong, and head to the Bight when you want calm water.
