San Salvador is a small, low island on the eastern edge of the Bahamas, best known as the place many historians believe Christopher Columbus first came ashore in 1492; it was called Watling's Island until 1925. Cockburn Town, the main settlement, is a cluster of pastel houses, a few churches and a dock, and the Queen's Highway loops around the whole island past inland salt lakes, empty beaches and plantation ruins. The reef just off the west coast drops into steep walls a short boat ride from shore, which is what brings most divers this far out.
When to go
December to April is dry and pleasant, though passing cold fronts can bring a few windy days and cooler water. Late spring and early summer are warm and often calm, a good stretch for diving, while August to October is the most active part of the June to November hurricane season. The island has only a handful of places to stay and dive, so book ahead for the winter holidays and spring break.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
Reaching San Salvador takes some planning. From Montreal (YUL) or Quebec City (YQB), the usual route is two connections: first to Nassau, through Toronto or a US hub such as Miami or Fort Lauderdale (from YQB this can mean a third leg), then a short domestic flight out to the island. The airport sits on the edge of Cockburn Town, so most hotels are only minutes away and resorts generally arrange the transfer. Domestic schedules are thin, so leave a comfortable buffer in Nassau rather than booking a tight connection.
What to see and do
- Wall diving and snorkelling off the west coast
- The Columbus landfall monuments at Long Bay
- The view from Dixon Hill Lighthouse
Good to know before you go
There is no public transit and no ride-hailing, so taxis meet flights and can be booked through your hotel, and many visitors explore the quiet Queen's Highway by bicycle or join tours run by their resort or dive shop. The currency is the Bahamian dollar, pegged one-to-one to the US dollar, and both are accepted everywhere; ATMs are few on the outer islands, so arrive with enough cash. English is spoken, and drinking bottled water is the safer habit. Bahamians greet each other before getting down to business, so a 'good morning' when you walk into a shop or climb into a taxi goes a long way.
