Curitiba, the capital of Paraná in southern Brazil, is the city urban planners like to cite: it pioneered bus rapid transit in the 1970s, built parks over old quarries and floodplains, and sits at around 900 metres with a cool, changeable climate. Polish, Italian, German and Ukrainian immigrants shaped it, which shows in its churches, bakeries and the Italian restaurants of Santa Felicidade. The best day out is the train down the Serra do Mar through Atlantic forest to the colonial town of Morretes, for a lunch of barreado, beef stew slow-cooked in a sealed clay pot.

When to go

Curitiba is one of Brazil's coldest state capitals, and the weather can change several times a day. Summer, December to March, is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, while winter, June to August, brings crisp sunny days, cold nights and occasional frost. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking between parks. Rain falls year-round and mist often wraps the Serra do Mar, so the train is at its best on a clear morning.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

There is no nonstop from Canada. From Montreal (YUL), most itineraries connect once to reach São Paulo, through Toronto, a US hub or Panama City, then take a one-hour domestic flight to Curitiba; some routings through Panama City skip São Paulo. From Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Afonso Pena Airport is in São José dos Pinhais, roughly 30 minutes from the centre by Uber or airport bus.

What to see and do

  • The Serra Verde Express train down to Morretes
  • The glass greenhouse of the Jardim Botânico
  • The Museu Oscar Niemeyer and its eye-shaped gallery
  • The Ópera de Arame and Parque Tanguá, set in former quarries
  • The Sunday crafts fair in Largo da Ordem

Good to know before you go

Curitiba's buses are among Brazil's best: express lines stop at raised tube stations where you pay before boarding, and the Linha Turismo hop-on bus loops past the main parks and museums. Uber and 99 are cheap and widely used. The currency is the Brazilian real, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Portuguese is spoken and English is limited outside hotels. Tap water is treated, though most locals filter it. Book the Serra Verde Express ahead for summer weekends, and consider returning from Morretes by bus for more time there.

Entry requirements and health

e-Visa required

You'll need a visa for this one, but the whole thing is done online before you go. Apply a little ahead of your trip and travel with the approval in hand.

Vaccines and health

Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
