Da Nang is central Vietnam's big beach city, a modern seafront where My Khe Beach runs for kilometres, with the Han River and its lit-up bridges cutting through the middle. It makes an easy base for the whole coast: the Marble Mountains sit at the southern edge of town, the cable cars of Ba Na Hills climb into the hills to the west, and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An is 30 to 45 minutes away. Start the day with a bowl of mi Quang, the region's turmeric-tinted noodles, and end it watching the Dragon Bridge breathe fire on a weekend night!
When to go
Central Vietnam runs on a different calendar from Hanoi or Saigon. February to May is the sweet spot, warm with calm seas, and June to August is hot, often above 35°C, but still fine beach weather. The rainy season runs from about September to December, with typhoons and floods most likely in October and November, rough surf, and fog on the mountain. December and January are cooler and drizzly.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada, and Da Nang is usually two connections away. From Montreal (YUL) the common routings go via Vancouver or Toronto to an Asian hub such as Seoul, Taipei or Singapore, or through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for a short domestic hop; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first leg to Montreal or Toronto. The airport sits right in town, 10 to 15 minutes by car from the beach hotels, and Hoi An is a 30 to 45 minute ride south.

Good to know before you go
Grab is the way to get around: its cars and motorbike taxis cover the city, the beaches and the run to Hoi An, the green Xanh SM electric taxis are just as easy to book, and Ba Na Hills and Hue are simplest with a tour or a driver for the day. The currency is the Vietnamese dong; cash rules at markets and street stalls, while hotels and larger restaurants take cards. Canadians need a visa, normally an e-visa applied for online, so check the current rules before you fly. English is limited outside tourist businesses, and tap water is not for drinking. Cover shoulders and knees in the pagodas, and at My Khe swim near the lifeguard flags, as rip currents are common when the surf picks up.
