Comodoro Rivadavia is a working city on the Golfo San Jorge, the largest in Chubut province and the place where Argentina struck oil in 1907 while drilling for water. Its streets run along the Atlantic beneath Cerro Chenque, whose lookout takes in the gulf, the port and the dry Patagonian steppe. It makes a practical base: sea lions lounge a short drive south near Rada Tilly, fossilized tree trunks lie across the desert near Sarmiento, and Ruta 3 heads south toward the far end of Patagonia.

When to go

Comodoro sits in a semi-arid stretch of Patagonia, so rain is light but the wind is constant and often fierce. Summer, December to February, is the most pleasant season, with long days, mild to warm afternoons and beach weather at Rada Tilly. Winter, June to August, is cold and grey, with frost and occasional snow. Spring and autumn are windy but still fine for the petrified forests if you dress in layers.

Getting there from Montreal

Expect at least two connections. From Montreal (YUL), you first reach Buenos Aires, usually through a US hub, Toronto, Panama City or São Paulo; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. International flights land at Ezeiza (EZE), while most domestic flights south leave from Aeroparque (AEP), about an hour across the city, so leave a generous gap. The flight to Comodoro takes a little over two hours, and the airport is a short taxi or remise ride north of the centre.

What to see and do

  • Rada Tilly beach and the sea lion colony at Punta del Marqués
  • The Museo Nacional del Petróleo and its oilfield history
  • The petrified forests around Sarmiento

Good to know before you go

Comodoro stretches along the coast, so plan on city buses, taxis and remises (pre-booked cars at an agreed price); ride-hailing coverage is patchy. For the petrified forests, take a long-distance bus to Sarmiento and arrange a transfer or tour there; the terminal also serves Trelew, Puerto Madryn and points south on Ruta 3. Argentina uses the peso, and exchange rules have shifted often in recent years, so check the current situation and bring some US dollars in clean notes; cards work in most hotels and restaurants. Spanish is the language. Tap water is treated, but bottled water is cheap; pack a windproof jacket in any season.
