Cuenca is Ecuador's colonial showpiece, a southern Andean city at about 2,500 metres where four rivers run through town and the blue-tiled domes of the New Cathedral rise over Parque Calderón. Its UNESCO-listed centre is full of balconied houses, churches and markets serving hornado (slow-roasted pork), and along the Río Tomebamba, old houses lean over the bank in El Barranco. Panama hats are woven from toquilla straw in nearby villages and finished in workshops in town, and the lake-dotted highlands of Cajas National Park begin less than an hour west.
When to go
Cuenca has spring-like weather all year, with mild days and cool nights that call for a sweater. Rain is possible in any month, with the wettest spells usually around March and April and drier, cooler weather more common from June to September. Cajas is colder and wetter than the city year-round, so pack rain gear. The city celebrates its independence around 3 November with parades and crafts fairs, and the Pase del Niño Viajero, a huge Christmas Eve procession, fills the centre on 24 December.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There is no nonstop from Canada. From Montreal (YUL), the usual path is one connection (Toronto, a US hub, Panama City or Bogotá) to Quito, then a short domestic flight to Cuenca; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Mariscal Lamar Airport is inside the city, about ten minutes by taxi from the centre. You can also land in Guayaquil and take a bus or shared van up through Cajas, a scenic ride of three and a half to four hours.
What to see and do

- Hiking among the lakes of Cajas National Park

Good to know before you go
The historic centre is compact and walkable, and the Tranvía, a light-rail line, crosses the city through the old town, with buses filling in the rest. Taxis are cheap and should use the meter (taxímetro), and inDrive also operates. Ecuador uses the US dollar; bring small bills, since $50 and $100 notes are often refused. Spanish is the language. Cuenca's tap water is treated and widely considered drinkable, though many visitors stick to bottled at first. Take your first day slowly at this altitude, and bring warm layers for Cajas, which climbs close to 4,000 metres.
Entry requirements and health
No visa needed
Good news: with a Canadian passport you can just show up for a short tourist stay, no visa needed. Keep an eye on how long you're allowed to stay so your trip fits.
Vaccines and health
Many travellers get vaccinated against hepatitis A and typhoid, which spread through food and water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some areas, and it's worth keeping the certificate handy. Malaria is present in some areas, so ask a clinic whether antimalarials make sense for your route.
