Cap-Haïtien, on Haiti's north coast, was once Cap-Français, capital of the French colony of Saint-Domingue, and its old streets still run down to a waterfront boulevard on the bay. It is the base for the country's most extraordinary monument, the Citadelle Laferrière, a mountaintop fortress Henri Christophe built after independence to guard against a French return, along with the ruins of his Sans-Souci palace in the village of Milot below. Haiti has been through serious political instability and gang violence in recent years, so read the Government of Canada travel advice (travel.gc.ca) before you book anything, and again just before you leave.

When to go

The north coast is hot all year. Showers are frequent from about October to January, when northeasterly winds push rain onto this coast, while spring and early summer tend to be drier but hotter. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk from August to October. Whatever the month, start the Citadelle visit early: the last stretch to the fortress is a steep climb, and the midday heat makes it much harder.

Getting there from Montreal

There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal, and flights into Haiti have been suspended and restored several times in recent years, so check what is actually operating before you plan. When the routes are running, Cap-Haïtien is usually reached through South Florida or a regional Caribbean hub, which from Montreal (YUL) means at least one connection and from Quebec City (YQB) usually two. Do not plan an overland trip from Port-au-Prince: the roads out of the capital pass through areas controlled by armed gangs. The airport sits on the edge of the city, a short drive from the centre, and it is best to have your hotel send a driver to meet you.

What to see and do

  • The Citadelle Laferrière, the UNESCO-listed fortress above Milot
  • The ruins of Sans-Souci Palace at Milot
  • The old town's colonial streets, cathedral and waterfront boulevard
  • The beaches west of town toward Cormier and Labadie

Good to know before you go

Around Cap-Haïtien, the sensible way to get about is with a driver or guide arranged through your hotel; tap-taps (shared pickup trucks) and moto-taxis are cheap but crowded and not always safe, there is no ride-hailing app, and travel after dark is best avoided. The currency is the Haitian gourde, US dollars are widely used, and cash is essential since cards are rarely accepted; prices are sometimes quoted in 'Haitian dollars', an informal unit worth five gourdes, so confirm which one you mean. Haitian Creole is the everyday language and French is widely understood; drink only bottled or treated water. Labadee, the beach enclave west of town, is leased to a cruise line and open only to its passengers. Do try griot (fried pork) with pikliz, the spicy pickled cabbage, and rice cooked with black djon djon mushrooms.
