Anguilla is a long, flat coral island at the northern end of the Leeward Islands, just north of St. Martin, a British Overseas Territory of about 15,000 people. It is a quiet place with no cruise-ship port and only low-rise hotels, ringed by some thirty white-sand beaches, from the reef-sheltered sweep of Shoal Bay East to the sunset coves of Meads Bay and Rendezvous Bay. Anguilla also eats well for an island this size, with menus built around locally caught lobster and crayfish. Spend the morning on the sand, take a small boat out to Sandy Island for lunch, and finish the day at a beach bar in Sandy Ground.
When to go
The dry season, roughly December to April, brings steady trade winds, sunshine and the busiest, most expensive weeks. Hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October, and many hotels and restaurants close for part of September and October. Late spring and early summer are a good compromise, with warm, calm water and fewer visitors. The Anguilla Summer Festival, from late July into early August, centres on boat racing, the national sport, along with parades and beach parties.
Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal
There are no nonstop flights from Quebec City or Montreal. Many visitors fly into St. Maarten (SXM), which has far more connections, then cross to Blowing Point on Anguilla by ferry in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, either on the public ferry from Marigot on the French side or on a private boat transfer from near the airport. You can also fly into Anguilla's small Clayton J. Lloyd airport on a connection through Miami or another Caribbean hub. From Montreal (YUL) that usually means one connection to St. Maarten or two to Anguilla itself, and from Quebec City (YQB) add one more, usually through Montreal or Toronto.
What to see and do
- Shoal Bay East, a long reef-sheltered beach for swimming and snorkelling
- Sunset at Meads Bay and Rendezvous Bay
- A boat trip to Sandy Island or the Prickly Pear Cays
- Little Bay, a cove under limestone cliffs reached by boat or kayak
- Boat races during the Summer Festival
Good to know before you go
Anguilla has no public bus network and no ride-hailing app, so taxis are the way around: they charge fixed rates by destination, so confirm the price before you leave and keep a driver's number for later pickups, or let your hotel arrange one. The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, but prices are often quoted in US dollars and both are accepted; cards work at hotels and most restaurants, while roadside barbecue stands and small beach bars may prefer cash. English is spoken, and since much of the water comes from cisterns or desalination, most visitors drink bottled or filtered water. If you do drive, it is on the left, and beachwear stays on the beach: cover up when you head into The Valley or a shop.
