Virgin Gorda is the third-largest of the British Virgin Islands, a narrow, hilly island whose southern tip is strewn with granite boulders the size of houses. At The Baths, those boulders tumble into the sea and form shaded grottoes and tidal pools that you wade and scramble through on the way to Devil's Bay. The rest of the island keeps a slow pace, from the small harbour at Spanish Town to the sheltered anchorages of North Sound, where some resorts and restaurants can only be reached by boat.

When to go

December to April brings the driest weather and steady trade winds, which makes it peak season for sailors and the busiest time at The Baths. Late spring and early summer often have calmer seas and fewer boats at anchor, a good window for snorkelling. Hurricane season runs June to November, and in September and October some resorts, bars and dive shops close for a few weeks. Swells can make the water at The Baths rough on some winter days, so check conditions locally before you head out.

Getting there from Quebec City and Montreal

Virgin Gorda's airstrip only takes small planes, so most visitors arrive in two stages. From Montreal (YUL), expect one or two connections through a US hub such as Miami or New York to Saint Thomas, San Juan or Tortola's Beef Island airport, then a ferry or short flight; from Quebec City (YQB), add a first leg to Montreal, Toronto or a US gateway. Ferries from Beef Island reach Spanish Town and North Sound in well under an hour, and some ferries from Saint Thomas run to Virgin Gorda via Road Town on fewer days. You clear BVI immigration on arrival.

Good to know before you go

There is no public bus, so you get around by taxi, usually open-air safari trucks with set fares between the ferry dock, The Baths and the north end, and by the water taxis that serve the North Sound resorts. There is no Uber, and the roads are steep, winding and driven on the left, so taxis and hotel transfers are the simple option. The currency is the US dollar and English is spoken; cards work at resorts and larger restaurants, but carry cash for taxis and beach bars. Go to The Baths early in the morning or late in the afternoon, before or after the charter boats arrive, wear water shoes for the wade between boulders, and drink bottled water, since tap water is often cistern-fed.
