Varanasi, also called Kashi and Banaras, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of Hinduism's holiest, stretched along a crescent of stone ghats on the Ganges. Pilgrims bathe at dawn, cremation fires burn day and night at Manikarnika, and behind the river the old city is a maze of lanes barely wide enough for a cow and a scooter to pass. Between walks on the ghats, eat kachori for breakfast, drink lassi from a clay cup and look into the workshops where Banarasi silk saris are woven.
When to go
October to March is the best time, with warm days and pleasant evenings on the river; Dev Deepawali, about two weeks after Diwali, lines the ghats with oil lamps and draws enormous crowds. December and January bring foggy mornings that can delay flights and trains. April to June is extremely hot, often above 40°C. In the monsoon, July to September, the river rises over the lower ghats and boat trips can be suspended.
Getting there from Quebec City
There is no nonstop from Canada, and Varanasi is usually two connections away. From Montreal (YUL) the common routing goes through a European or Gulf hub to Delhi or Mumbai, then a short domestic flight to Varanasi; from Quebec City (YQB) add a first hop to Montreal or Toronto. Trains from Delhi are an alternative for the last leg. The airport is at Babatpur, about 25 km northwest of the city, so allow roughly an hour to reach the ghats, and expect to walk the last stretch, since cars cannot enter the old city lanes.

The ghats and old city are best covered on foot and by boat: you can walk the riverfront from Assi Ghat to Dashashwamedh, and rowing boats wait at the main ghats (agree on the price and duration first). E-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws handle short hops, and Uber and Ola suit longer rides such as Sarnath or the airport. The currency is the Indian rupee; carry cash for boats, rickshaws and food stalls, as foreign cards work mostly in hotels. Canadians need a visa for India, normally the e-Visa, but the rules for Canadian passport holders have changed in recent years, so check the current situation before booking. Never photograph cremations, ignore anyone asking for donations for cremation wood, drink only bottled water, and admire the Ganges from a boat rather than swimming in it.
